Easter at Rekindle: Laughter, Talent and LeBron the Egg

Over the Easter holidays, Our Manchester team ran a brilliant holiday club at Rekindle, attended by a lively group of young Rekindlers. Here, our Creative Educator Demereece reflects on a week filled with sunshine, creativity and community.

Spring, Sun & Small Wins

The Easter break at Rekindle was a huge success! The young people were able to enjoy the sun and were served great food every day. The first session that we did was embracing spring and the ideas of rebirth and new growth as the sun begins to shine. Together we did creative representations of what we want to have done through the Easter break and beyond, exploring small personal wins (for example, I wanted to stop biting my nails) to thinking about the future and the steps that can be taken to achieve the goals we had set for ourselves.

It was a wonderful sight to see new and old Rekindlers come together and spend their Easter break with one another. Having everyone in the 4G’s room simply just conversing, laughing, and all sat at the table eating, these moments really conceptualised the ‘village’ that Rekindle has come to be.

Egg-cellent Engineering & Unexpected Celebs

Another highlight session for me was when the young people customised their own eggs and built makeshift towers to see whose egg could stand the longest. This again was such a lovely opportunity to see the young people outside creating and giving insights into why they designed their eggs the way they did. Seeing their designs come to life was a real treat as I was fortunate enough to meet Lebron James! That being in the form of a fantastically painted egg.

Talent, Tricks & Terrific Judges

The Easter break culminated with a talent show appropriately titled “Rekindle’s Got Talent”, we had great acts such as a comedy duo,a musical performance and even some magic. All prepared and performed solely by the young people themselves. Being able to watch them come up with their acts and the reaction of their peers (who served as a brilliant audience/judges) was a magical experience to say the least.

The Easter break was a strong reminder that allowing young people to create and have the space to freely express themselves should always be celebrated and the community that we have built and that continues to grow is that much more powerful with young people at the forefront.
