Owen Mitchell- Language and Power in Education

Owen is passionate about the role of language in shaping power and inclusion in education. Their research explores who chooses the language of education, who gets heard, how verbal contributions are valued differently, and the impact of language on belonging and confidence.

Owen’s project investigates the power dynamics of language in education. Through creative mediums, they aim to explore:

  • How different accents, tones, and word choices affect whose voices are heard and valued.
  • Whether students feel proud of how they speak—or pressured to change.
  • How language can reinforce inequality or foster inclusivity in schools.

Their research will take the form of:

  • A free-form podcast series exploring lived experiences.
  • A creative video essay/film that captures voices and perspectives.

How You Can Get Involved

Owen is looking for:

  • Students, teachers, and academics willing to share their experiences.
  • Contributors for the podcast or video project.
  • People to reflect on how language impacts their confidence and identity.

This is a fully collaborative project, open to all voices and perspectives.
