Our approach places the experiences and views of young people at the heart of what we do. Our past cohort of researchers undertook six exciting projects to explore what would truly help close the gap for disadvantaged young people accessing education – bringing back joy and support success for all.
Their work concluded at Campfire: Reimagining Education, a one-day gathering at the People’s History Museum in Manchester, where they presented their findings to a diverse audience of young people, families, educators, academics and community members.
The event marked the culmination of a year’s research and sparked conversations that will continue to shape Rekindle’s vision for change. Read more about their research topics and findings below.
Pal’s work explored how intersectionality affects students, particularly those from poorer backgrounds, in terms of mental health, bullying, and neurodiversity.
Finty researched belonging and its profound impact on wellbeing, utilising co-production with those who are most impacted by issues relating to this.
Mel advocated for embedding care institutionally through mental health support, inclusive teaching practices, and transformative conflict resolution to reshape education; within this was the consideration of how teaching about conflict (power dynamics, transformative justice) can change how young people think and act.
In Melisa’s project was on Social Capital and the perception among state school students that certain universities are unattainable. She explored the impact on confidence of academic abilities and whether addressing this factor can drive wider changes in the state education system.
In this project, Owen explored how the policing of language and banning slang in schools for the purposes of assimilation affects working-class/minority ethnic identities.
Aaron’s project focused on Youth Voice Facilitation, assessing if students influence school decisions and are heard by senior leadership, and what impact this has on wider participation and positive experiences of young people.
