YOUTH LED RESEARCH

Our approach places the experiences and views of young people at the heart of what we do. Our first cohort of Youth Researchers are underway with six exciting projects on different things to make a big difference in the lives of disadvantaged young people.

SOLUTION-FOCUSED RESEARCH

We’re working with brilliant young researchers to find out what helps to close the gap between disadvantaged young people and their peers, to bring back joy and to support success for all.
Over time, we’ll refine these into proven rigorous methodologies that can be replicated nationwide and shared to make systemic change.

SIX YOUTH-LED RESEARCH PROJECTS

Each of the brilliant youth researchers is taking an in-depth look at a different area which their own experience and available research tells us can be impactful in the experiences, engagement and joy of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

We’re asking:

  • How do restrictions on the use of language/’slang’ in schools impact on experiences of young people?
  • How can young people’s perceptions of belonging be used to positively shape tools which support antidotes to loneliness?
  • In what ways can we embed holistic care practices in UK school structures using a mind, body and spirit framework?
  • Where do state school students develop their educational capital from and does this impact their view of certain universities being unattainable?
  • How do intersectional pressures shape students’ educational experiences and what do they feel can be done to support them?
  • Do students in state secondary schools feel that youth voice is facilitated well?

What resonates most with you? We’d love to hear from you if you have thoughts you’d like to share in any of these areas.

LANGUAGE

In this project, Owen is exploring how the policing of language and banning slang in schools for the purposes of assimilation affects working-class/minority ethnic identities

BELONGING

Finty is researching belonging and its profound impact on wellbeing, utilising co-production with those who are most impacted by issues relating to this

CARE

Mel is advocating for embedding care institutionally through mental health support, inclusive teaching practices, and transformative conflict resolution to reshape education; within this is the consideration of how teaching about conflict (power dynamics, transformative justice) can change how YP think and act

ASPIRATION

In Melisa’s project, the topic is Social Capital and the perception among state school students that certain universities are unattainable; she’s exploring the impact on confidence in academic abilities and whether addressing this factor can drive wider changes in the state education system

INTERSECTIONALITY

Pal’s work explores how intersectionality affects students, particularly those from poorer backgrounds, regarding mental health, bullying, and neurodiversity

YOUTH VOICE

Aaron’s project centres on Youth Voice Facilitation, assessing if students influence school decisions and are heard by senior leadership, and what impact this has on wider participation and positive experiences of young people

Commitment to platform unheard voices

We are gathering the voices of those in our communities, particularly those not used to being heard, to contribute to ideas and support for meaningful change.

This, along with our research and use of evidence already available, will underpin the foundations on which we’ll advocate for effective changes to education policy and practice.

We mean it when we say that ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ and we are committed to ensuring that all those passionate about the change that is needed are able to contribute, to have their voices heard and to be able to make a difference.

Young People

If any of the themes above resonate with you, please get in touch – we would absolutely love to hear your stories and to give you a way for your voice to be heard, in YOUR words, not ours.

Educators

If you would like to be part of our research work, to help us to design and to complete in-setting programmes which are focused on transforming the lives of disadvantaged young people for the better, please reach out – we would absolutely love to work with you on one of our projects.

There are other ways for your voice and ideas to be heard too, so please do let us know if you’d like to know more.

In the next academic year, we’ll be looking for school based researchers who work in education, so keep an eye out for more about that coming soon!

Academics and researchers

We’re so fortunate to have a wealth of existing and ongoing research to utilise. If you would like to join our wonderful ranks of Academic Champions, or you’d like to share some of your work / areas of research with us because you think it will add to what we’re doing, we would love to hear from you.

Families

Your contributions matter so much. If there’s a way for you to be involved at this state in our research, or to work with us in thinking about next steps for our academic work, please reach out. We’ll find a way to get your contribution and involvement started as soon as possible.

Elders

Are you passionate about successful experiences and outcomes for disadvantaged young people? Do you have insight, wisdom or experience to share? You will be so welcome in our Village – please do get in touch.
