Future City Lab

Prototype the future Manchester you want to see in this 10-week free creative innovation programme for 11–16 year olds in Hulme and Moss Side.

Future City Lab invites you to imagine, design and prototype bold ideas for the future of your neighbourhood.

From youth spaces and transport to safety, the environment and creativity, this is a space to ask:
What could Hulme and Moss Side become – and how do we start building it?

What is Future City Lab?

Cities are shaped by decisions – but young people are rarely invited into that process.

Future City Lab creates space for young people to think critically about the world around them and actively design alternatives. It builds confidence, creativity and agency – helping participants see themselves not just as residents, but as contributors to Manchester’s future.

You’ll explore the real issues shaping your area and develop creative responses through design, making and storytelling.

Across ten weeks, you’ll work as a group to:

  • Identify challenges and opportunities in your neighbourhood

  • Generate ideas for change

  • Build physical models and digital prototypes

  • Develop creative responses that reflect your vision for the future

This is about turning ideas into something tangible – not just talking about change, but designing it.

Who it’s for

  • Young people aged 11–16

  • Based in Hulme, Moss Side or surrounding areas

  • Curious about creativity, design, cities or social change

  • Keen to work with others and build something meaningful

No previous experience is needed – just ideas, energy and willingness to take part.
