Skateboards, Spray Paint and Self-Expression at Rekindle London

Rekindle London recently hosted SOLDIER, a multidisciplinary creative whose practice moves between painting, sculpture and design, underpinned by themes of identity, critique and belonging. Over three days, SOLDIER led a skateboard design workshop delivered with one of our key funders, Mission 44.
Local young people experimented with spray paint, acrylics and pens to transform blank decks into bold, personal artworks. SOLDIER’s approach – using art to question identity and open up conversation – echoed Rekindle’s belief in creativity as a way for young people to express themselves and see the world from new angles.
Creative expression is such a unique and personal experience. Seeing the space come alive with young people supporting and engaging with each other’s designs was incredible, and it really highlights the importance of creative outlets in giving young people the chance to explore who they are.

Parents also shared how much the sessions meant to their children:
It has literally made one of her dreams come true!
For the first time in a long time, [my child] is excited to do after-school activities.
The results were full of imagination, expression and character. It was a brilliant example of what can happen when youth organisations collaborate to open up creative opportunities for young people.
