Togetherness Matters: Reflections from Our Final (for now) Sunday Social

On 30th March, as on the last Sunday of every month, we opened our doors to Elders in Hulme and Moss Side for our Sunday Social—a day filled with connection, joy, and learning.
This gathering has been a space for those over 60 to come together over a home-cooked meal, conversation, and shared experiences. From music and poetry to deep discussions about the lives and histories of our Elders, these events have been a celebration of community in its truest form.
But last Sunday marked a bittersweet milestone—our final Sunday Social in its current form. Why? Because our funding for these events has come to an end.
We asked those who attended why they came and what it meant to them. Here’s what they shared:
As the final stories were shared and goodbyes exchanged, it was clear just how much these Sunday Socials have meant to those who joined us. While this was our last gathering for now, the need for spaces like this hasn’t gone away. The warmth, laughter and connection we’ve seen each month remind us what’s possible – and what we’d love to continue, given the right support.
If you or your organisation believes in the power of connection and community, we’d love to hear from you. Whether through partnership, resource-sharing or future funding opportunities, we’re open to conversations about how Sunday Socials might return – stronger and more sustainable.
